Am I rich?

Many a time have I wondered what I would do if I had to win the lottery. Not that I play or take part... Would I spend it all, would I invest it, would I start a charity? I do not know yet, but then again, guess I won't have that problem until I play!

The bigger question is if the money you have make you truely rich? Most people do not have enough money, even though in SA there is a great devide between rich and poor. How does it happen that we consider ourselves as 'not rich' when we form part of the top 10% income earners? Makes no sense...

Money can't buy happiness is the old saying, but if money does not make me rich, what does? I've heard someone saying that the things that makes us rich are those that we cannot buy with money: friends, family, love, respect, a smile, etc.

There is a song sung by Lukas Maree, an afrikaans artist that passed away not long ago. He sings about the widdow that had to fill the clay pots with oil. As she kept pouring, more and more oil came out of her small pot. Read the story in 1 Kings 17: 
11 As she was going to get it, he called, "And bring me, please, a piece of bread."

12 "As surely as the LORD your God lives," she replied, "I don't have any bread—only a handful of flour in a jar and a little olive oil in a jug. I am gathering a few sticks to take home and make a meal for myself and my son, that we may eat it—and die."

13 Elijah said to her, "Don't be afraid. Go home and do as you have said. But first make a small loaf of bread for me from what you have and bring it to me, and then make something for yourself and your son. 14 For this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: 'The jar of flour will not be used up and the jug of oil will not run dry until the day the LORD sends rain on the land.'"

15 She went away and did as Elijah had told her. So there was food every day for Elijah and for the woman and her family. 16 For the jar of flour was not used up and the jug of oil did not run dry, in keeping with the word of the LORD spoken by Elijah.

See, it is quite simple: the more you are willing to give, the more you will receive. Not to enrich yourself, but for the Glory of God. For as Lukas Maree says: for it is the things we give away that makes us rich...

On Broadway

WOW Tonight my wife and I went to their schools musical. It's an annual affair and improves yearly. My wife has nothing to do with it, but loves to go and as a consequence I go with. Every year I walk out of there blessed by the pure talent at hand.   It is quite obvious that the kids, as well as the teachers involved dedicate a major amount of time to the musical. To sing probably comes naturally to most of them, but to do it to perfection requires sheer determination. And then comes the dancing... It isn't just a sing-song, the kids have to dance and perform while singing. this has to be practised over and over to perfect. For them the end result comes at a cost. Nothing in life that is worth something comes easily, it comes at a cost. Passion, dedication, time and effort. Without putting your mind and body into it it won't happen. Dedicate your time to your passion, let your passion be the Lord.

Sitting in my coffeeshop

Often we go to a coffee shop to have a piece of cake, as well as some traditional coffee. I don't have a favourite shop, but try out as many different as possible. Friends tell us about a new shop they have discovered and then we also visit those. When we go there one of our favourite things to do is to pretend to figure out what other people are discussing. It usually turns out more or less like a soap opera, overelaborate and dramatic. We say the first thing that comes to mind. We do roleplay where my wife has a part I have a part. Normally very funny! The last time we did this I sat there thinking: What if another couple did the same with us? What would they be saying? How much drama would they build into their act, seeing as I am a little bit expressive?! The fact of the matter is that how you see other people is in all likelihood how they will see you.
